What did founders do first?
268 founders with a recorded career before founding, drawn from 439 in the corpus. This cohort is founders who later surfaced in SEC proxy filings — people who reached public-company leadership. It is not a sample of founders in general, and it cannot speak to founders whose companies stayed private or failed.
Where they came from
730 roles held before founding, each counted once. Where the executive function taxonomy the rest of this site uses can read a title, it does. It was built to classify sitting executives, so it cannot read every origin; a wider one covers consulting, academia, investing, military & government and professional services. Of those, professional services clears the reporting floor of 25 here. Consulting, academia, investing and military & government do not clear it, so whatever this corpus holds of them sits inside the collapsed row rather than carrying a bar above. How much that is, this page will not say: reporting a count below the floor is the thing the floor exists to prevent.
The bar leading this chart is none of that. “Operating role, function not identified” is not a category and should not be read as one — it is the residue: 214 titles that name a rank without a department, or a job without a discipline. They are counted because the roles are real, and labelled this way because filing them under any heading here would be a guess.

How this page is computed
Cohort. Executives in world.exec_events with at least one is_founder event.
Anchor. Earliest founding event by start_date; seq breaks ties. seq alone is bio-narration order, not chronology.
Pre-founding set. Events strictly before the anchor, excluding board seats.
Noise. A title whose every word is a generic filler word — various, leadership, positions, employee — names no role and is counted as unusable, never rendered. One substantive word keeps it.
Classification. classifyExecFunction first, except its board-seat verdict, which misreads Managing Director here; classifyOrigin reads everything it leaves unresolved.
Floor. Buckets under n=25 collapse into a single under-the-floor bucket.
Duration. Computed only where the anchor and at least one prior role both carry dates.
The better-evidenced half of this question: where these founders landed after founding → These bios exist because the person reached public-company leadership, so the years after founding are the best-recorded stretch of the record — and the years before it the thinnest.
